Guide
What does a construction scheduler (P6 scheduler) do?
A construction scheduler builds and maintains the project's critical path schedule: breaking the work into activities, tying them together with logic, setting durations, and updating progress every period. A P6 scheduler does this in Oracle Primavera P6. The real job is forecasting: telling the team what finishes when, and what threatens the date.
Building the schedule
At the start of a job the scheduler builds the baseline: the work breakdown structure, the activities, the logic between them, durations, calendars, and the milestones the contract cares about. Good schedulers build it with the people who'll do the work, not alone at a desk.
The update cycle
Most of the job is the update, usually weekly or monthly:
- Collect progress from the field: actual starts, actual finishes, and remaining durations.
- Move the data date and enter the progress.
- Recalculate the schedule (F9 in P6).
- Review what changed: the critical path, float on key work, and the forecast finish.
- Write the narrative that explains why dates moved and what's at risk.
- Publish the look-ahead the foremen will actually use.
Quality, changes, and delays
Schedulers check their own schedules for problems like missing logic, too many hard constraints, and unexplained float. Many use the DCMA 14-point assessment as a health check. When scope changes or delays hit, the scheduler models the impact so the team can see what it does to the finish date.
Job titles you will see
Scheduler, planner, planner/scheduler, project controls specialist, and project controls engineer often overlap. Read the duties, not just the title.
What carries over from the trades
Knowing the real sequence of work, knowing what a crew can install in a day, and being able to talk to foremen. A scheduler who can walk the job and know when the schedule is lying is worth a lot. If that's you, read how to become a construction scheduler from the trades.
Common questions
Is a construction scheduler the same as a project manager?
No. The project manager owns the project: cost, contracts, client, and the team. The scheduler owns the time model and the forecast and supports the PM's decisions with it.
Is scheduling a desk job?
Mostly, but the best schedulers walk the job. The schedule is only as good as the progress and logic that go into it, and that comes from the field.
Do I have to know Primavera P6?
For large commercial, industrial, and public work, P6 is the tool you'll see most. Smaller jobs often use Microsoft Project. The CPM fundamentals are the same.
